  • Patterns and Consequences of Segregation in Dallas

    -

Dallas has been and continues to be segregated by race and income. This intergenerational panel will draw on personal experiences to discuss the reality and consequences of segregation and the policies and practices that maintain and further segregate the city. The discussion will explore how we can improve the lives of people living in poverty without, as Mary Pattillo says, “stigmatiz[ing] Black people and Black spaces and valorize[ing] Whiteness as both the symbol of opportunity and the measuring stick for equality.” Panelists will share their visions of change for political, economic, and social institutions to create fairness, opportunity, and justice. The friction and reconciliation between generations, their experiences, their visions, and their beliefs will produce a framework to guide the discussion for the 2020 summit.

  • In the Face of Gentrification: Exploring the Future of Housing in Dallas

    -

This panel of experts and community leaders will examine housing issues in Dallas. As neighborhoods undergo significant revitalization efforts, residents struggle to keep up with rising costs and the changing face of the community. Panelist will discuss the multifaceted nature of gentrification, the impacts and causes, and how revitalization can be approached to benefit all community members, especially the most vulnerable. The discussion will draw on both personal and academic understandings of the role gentrification plays in racial and class tensions in Dallas and strategies to combat displacement and promote economic and housing justice.

  • Lunch Discussion: Cooperative Economics and Local Development

    -

Responsible development is critical for the future of Dallas. How can we nurture the vast, rich human resource of our neighborhood businesses as drivers to build communities? R. John Anderson says that small scale development “is a tremendous opportunity for people of color and low-income communities to claim a long-denied share of wealth and opportunity. Inclusiveness is especially critical in an era when cities and close-in suburbs are seeing a trending demand for walkable neighborhoods…the way to make those changes more graceful than if we were to see disruptive gentrification would be to do it on a smaller scale, with more participation of people in those neighborhoods already.” This session will offer a framework for understanding current practices and policies that will provide developers, designers, engineers, and policymakers a glimpse of an alternative vision for Dallas.

  • The Future of Work in Dallas: Local Solutions to Support Working Families

    -

The nature of work is changing worldwide. The rates of inequality in Dallas illustrate that the economy is not working for workers. How can the city sustain economic growth while creating opportunities and prosperity for local workers? This panel will illustrate how work has changed and discuss the policies and practices necessary to ensure just work environments and full and equal participation. The esteemed panelists from diverse perspectives will discuss the future of work in Dallas and the structural changes facing the workforce and what we can do to ensure the dignity of workers and living wages for all.

  • Democratic Possibilities: School Segregation, Charter Schools, and Accessing Quality Education in Dallas

    -

Residential and school segregation are mutually reinforcing dynamics. This panel will focus on the way education, race, and democracy are intertwined. Panelists will discuss how schools limit and/or open up opportunities and possibilities. In the context of increasing segregation and privatization, we will discuss the policies and practices needed to create access to high-quality education, which in turn, protects American democratic possibilities.

  • Unmaking the Carceral City

    -

Growing inequality in global cities has produced increased rates of violence and crime, a lack of affordable housing, and communities segregated by class and race. This panel will discuss different modalities of urban justice, gentrification, protest, collective power, and state-sponsored violence in Dallas and around the globe. Panelists will explore non-carceral antiviolence alternatives and the potential for solidarity and learning in cross-national contexts.
